What It Actually Is

A terrible name for a straightforward thing.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, which is a terrible name for something quite straightforward. You bring a specific memory to mind while doing a simple repeated task, eye movements, tapping, or alternating sounds. That combination appears to let the brain file the memory properly, as something that happened rather than something happening.

You stay awake, present and in control throughout. It is not hypnosis. You can stop at any point. And you do not have to narrate the whole event in detail for it to work, which is why it suits people who have found retelling unbearable or useless.

When I Suggest It

When EMDR Is the Right Tool

  • When you understand your history perfectly and it has changed nothing
  • When a memory still produces a physical response years later
  • When one specific event is sitting underneath a lot of present-day symptoms
  • When talk therapy has helped and then plateaued

What It Does Not Do

The honest limits.

EMDR is not a single-session fix and I will not sell it as one. It does not erase memories. It does not work identically for everyone, and it is not the right starting point for everybody, sometimes we need to build stability first, and I will say so.
