About the Geography

Los Angeles is not a neighborhood, so I will not pretend to be around the corner.

This city is roughly five hundred square miles. A therapist listed in Los Angeles might be forty minutes from you or an hour and fifty, depending on where you live and what time your session is. I have no office anywhere in the city proper. My one physical room is in Pasadena, and for most Angelenos the sensible default is secure video.

That is not a lesser option dressed up nicely. It is the format that lets someone in Mar Vista or Highland Park actually keep a weekly appointment for six months instead of three weeks.

The Method

What EMDR is, minus the mystique.

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing means holding a memory in mind while your attention is partly occupied by something bilateral: eye movements, alternating taps, sometimes tones. The brain revisits material it stored in a hurry and files it more usefully. Nothing is erased, and you do not have to describe the whole story out loud.

What tends to change is intensity, so the memory reads as past tense. How long that takes for you, I genuinely do not know, and I will not invent a number to make this page more persuasive.

Video Specifics

Does EMDR really work through a screen.

  • Bilateral stimulation adapts cleanly to video, usually a moving visual on your screen or self-administered alternating taps.
  • You need a private hour and a decent connection. Headphones help. A door that closes helps more.
  • We agree in advance what happens if the connection drops mid-set, so a technical hiccup is not its own crisis.
  • You end at home rather than driving the 110 twenty minutes after reprocessing, which many people prefer.

If You Want the Room

Pasadena is the in-person option, and intensives make the drive worth it.

Some people want a physical room for this work, and I understand why. If you are willing to come east, the Pasadena office is available. Clients who travel across the city often prefer the intensive format, one 60-minute intake plus three 3-hour sessions at $2,300, because it turns four separate crosstown trips into a short, deliberate arc.
